Remembering those Who Have Gone Before Us
On Saturday, May 24, 2025, the Sisters of St. Joseph paid respect to their beloved Sisters who have passed. Their pilgrimage began with a special prayer service followed by a trip to the cemeteries.
They visited the 230 Sisters buried at Trinity Cemetery, West Lake Road, Erie, Pa. A wreath was placed in front of Mother Agnes Spencer’s memorial. They then visited the 283 Sisters whose final resting place is in Calvary Cemetery, also on West Lake Road. A wreath was placed infront of the statue of Joseph, Mary and Jesus.
(Special thank you to J.J. Wurst Landscape Contractor and Garden Center, Inc. for their tender care of the Sisters’ gravesites.)

Reflection:
* Shared suffering is one expression of our mission of unioning love.
* I wish to be as deeply human as Jesus, as all the dear neighbors.
* Pray and take action to mitigate global climate disasters.

In 1835, Sister St. John Fontbonne, leader of the Sisters of St. Joseph in France, sent six women to St. Louis, Missouri, to teach the deaf and to work with the Indians.
The St. Louis-based group grew in number and in service. One particularly enterprising woman, Sister Agnes Spencer, served countless northeastern communities until 1860, when she was charged by the Sisters of St. Joseph to settle in a small community within the Diocese of Erie.
In this new land, the Sisters did exactly what they had done in France: they served the needs of the era … and the area. Whenever … and wherever they were asked to serve, the Sisters responded to the needs of this growing nation.
